The Sunshine Blogger Award – Pass the Baton of Happiness

Hello and welcome back, my dear reader! Today the Handy Millennial is going to participate in a little-known tradition called the Sunshine Blogger Award. If you’re confused about this, let me explain (because frankly the Handy Millennial was just as lost at first).

The Sunshine Blogger Award is a post by a relatively new blogger that in-effect introduces them to the blogging community (both to readers and to other bloggers). In this post, the blogger can reach out to other bloggers to connect and to advertise that they are aware of each other. The blogger can also answer some (hopefully) more personal questions that can show the reader a more human, reachable side.

sunshine blogger award schoolCome to think of this, the Sunshine Blogger Award reminds the Handy Millennial of the journal tradition in his elementary school. When the Handy Millennial was a little boy, there was this journal that would get passed around his elementary school class and kids would write in it – you know, to communicate, since face to face was hard. It made people feel included and it served to add a bit of cohesion to the group. Interestingly, we now engage in similar behavior but on designated websites or chat services and on our phones…

So the obvious question, then, is why would the Handy Millennial engage in this? After all, the Handy Millennial has grown up just a tad since those early days. Well, it’s simple, my dear reader! This post is a great opportunity to connect with other bloggers, answer some candid questions, and connect with the readers of this blog. One small glimpse into the mind of the Handy Millennial – this is all you get folks! Enjoy it!

Okay, so if we are going to pass around the Baton of Happiness (my joking reference to this award πŸ™‚ ), I think we should lay some ground rules! Ps. the Handy Millennial will tweak one, because well, this is the Here we go:

Sunshine Blogger Award Rules:

  1. Thank blogger(s) who nominated you in the blog post and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
  3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
    1. Addendum: Why only 11? Add some Famous Blogs you like. Add some Established Blogs you like. Finally, add some Fun Blogs you like.
  4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

Got that? Great! So the Handy Millennial was nominated for this award by Melanie from Partners in Fire. Melanie is a new and very passionate blogger. The Handy Millennial would like to thank her for passing him this baton of kindness and to encourage my readers to visit her site. If you are blogger, you may especially enjoy Melanie’s post on how to start and grow your Twitter account.

Questions that Melanie asked:

Who or What inspired you to start your blog?

The Handy Millennial has always enjoyed being Handy. In fact, it was quite common before the advent of this blog for the Handy Millennial to come up with new tasks just to keep himself entertained. This drove Millennial Rosie, his friends, and his family quite mad on occasion. Of course they also enjoyed the fruits of his labor.

Now while the Handy Millennial enjoyed tinkering, HM did not really have an audience for his work. Most days people would thank him and then life would go on. This made HM a little sad; you see a whole day might go by the way working on some goal, and to most people it is just another thing that now works. So to fix this problem, HM decided to blog about his handy pursuits. Now, not only is the Handy Millennial happy to be handy and not only are people around him happy to have a working life, but the adventures are recorded for posterity.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

The interaction. Next. Just kidding! But seriously, the interaction as a blogger is much, much more rewarding than the interaction as a reader. Since beginning to blog, the Handy Millennial has met many people in the Personal Finance Community. They are incredible, supportive, and fun to be around, even if only virtually.

Closely tied to the interactions on this blog is the feeling of being a creator. Now, the Handy Millennial always was a creator, but blogging has provided a new outlet for creativity. Because this outlet happens to be writing, the Handy Millennial has also become more discerning in what he reads. These are all great by-products of blogging, and together with the interactions, make for a great experience.

Who inspires you?

This is a tough one. The Handy Millennial assumes that Melanie means in the blogging world? I would have to say that the blogger that inspires me the most when it comes to being passionate is Kristy from Millennial Revolution. The blogger that inspires me the most about every day life is Chief Mom Officer. I am hugely inspired by the strength of CMO and by the fantastic things she is doing for her family.

What has been your greatest achievement?

Hmm, is this question about blogging? Well if it is, then HM’s greatest achievement to date is keeping his writing schedule :). Keeping a regular schedule can be quite the treadmill that has the tendency to chew you up and spit you out. Somehow we have made it 4 months already, and we will try to keep this going.

The Handy Millennial is also quite proud of the writing style that is evolving from this blog. To be humble for a moment, it seems that readers are quite enjoying the product so far.

What are your three favorite blogs?

This one is easy; I currently track three pretty well established blogs: The Financial Samurai, Millennial Revolution, and My Money Wizard. Love those guys, and love their style of writing. If you haven’t checked them, out please do!!!

If you could have any super power, what would it be?

This one is totally easy: the Handy Millennial would like to have infinite energy. Do you, my dear reader, feel your energy wane as the day goes by? Do you feel tired? Do you feel like you can’t pay attention anymore? Well HM does too. And he believes that it would be amazing if you could just have infinite energy!

If you could wake up tomorrow magically knowing one aspect of blogging, what would it be?

The Handy Millennial would like to know how people find so much traffic! The traffic that some websites find is astounding! The fundamental problem here is that people have to find your website. Of course, your content keeps them coming back, but how one could find, say, 10,000 readers a month is astounding to HM at the moment. Joe from Retire by 40 recently had a nice piece on this topic. Apparently, it’s all about your network – aha!

What are your plans for retirement?

Retirement? What’s that? The Handy Millennial would like to reach a point where employment will be a tad more flexible and perhaps a tad less of a commitment, but the Handy Millennial would like to hopes to life a long, creative, and productive life.

Okay, let’s be serious. Retirement for the Handy Millennial sounds like an antique car that is waiting to be restored, a mustang (actual horse, not necessarily the car) ready for a makeover, and a plane ticket to somewhere new and exciting a few times a year.

What is your favorite investment type/fund/vehicle?

Index funds. On a long enough horizon, no one beats the market. There is probably a theory there for an economist to discover – we are too small to really recognize the macro trends in the world, and therefore we are always swayed by them. If the Handy Millennial were FI? Well then, perhaps some diversification into income-producing real estate might be in order. Everything has stages, and at the current stage: index is king.

If you knew 10 years ago what you know now, what would you change?

Nothing. The Handy Millennial is happy to be here and to be who he is. Everything that HM knows now is simply a product of his past. Why mess with it??

What is your number one life goal?

To be happy and to leave life one day feeling fulfilled.

    1. Hi FSD! Thanks for stopping by! Life certainly does get in the way. I’m glad you are enjoying the style and I hope to keep you entertained for a long time to come.

I can give you a little sneak peak at my January Traffic Report – Content really is king. If you stop posting your visitors will slowly grind to nothing. Fresh content keeps them coming. I suppose at some point this gets easier – with a few hundred posts under your belt I’m sure that search and referral traffic will likely balloon.

  3. Man, I always get left out, this feels just like high school! Oh well, I hope the rest of you have fun, sniff, sniff, sob………

    1. Hi Steveark! Thanks for stopping by again! Not to worry, you will be added shortly, although I fear this will make you feel like the last kid picked at kickball. I’ve really appreciated the thoughtful comments you left early on, on my site. I actually didn’t realize you had a blog too! I’m excited to check out some good content!

      1. I’m still so new I have no idea what I don’t know. Just found out my email program was sending any notifications about comments to spam. I’m sure people are thinking I’m rude when in reality I’m merely incompetent. Hmmm, not sure which of those is worse?

  4. This was such a nice respite from reading the terrible news of the day. Glad to see the blogging community is so positive!

    1. Thanks Bob! Glad you enjoyed the post. I agree things are getting a bit too dark – I will do my best to keep it light and educational around here :).

  5. Neat idea! You can never have too many awards! πŸ™‚

I might need your help with my new Schlage Sense lock at the Airbnb. Stay tuned. Man that thing was a pain to set up….

    1. Thanks Cubert! This came out of nowhere for me too. I’m curious to hear about this lock.
